Tailored Restraint

Berlin, WI ThedaCare Medical Center Berlin - Emergency Department

Completed in 2021 while employed as Project Designer & Senior Associate at HGA

A simple exterior design with materials selected and detailed to match, but update, the original hospital. Brick meets the existing building, while the contrasting stone highlights the patient entry to simplify wayfinding for hurried Emergency Department visitors & patients.

Warm wood of the underside of the canopy, entry vestibule and selectively used throughout the lobby, welcomes overwhelmed visitors and patients as they arrive.

In the clinical area, cost-effective lighting strategies highlight a central open work area, while branded pops of color identify patient exam rooms that surround it. Patients directly enjoy a small connection to the outdoors through small windows in each room, while the all glass doors allow staff to experience the benefits of borrowed daylight.
